Uruguay issued for the first time a sustainability-linked bond

A fundamental step in Uruguay’s climate agenda

At the end of last year, Uruguay issued for the first time a sustainability-linked bond (SLB), thus aligning the country’s sovereign financing policy with its climate goals. It issued a total of US$1.5 billion worth of SLBs, with demand outstripping supply by a factor of two and half.

This innovative issuance allowed Uruguay to broaden the pool of investors in the country's debt securities. Importantly, by issuing this instrument, the country also committed to reaching ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets and to putting in place measures to encourage carbon sequestration in forestry plantations and native forests. These objectives underly the KPIs that are at the heart of this SLB issuance.

Un paso fundamental hacia un futuro sostenible en Uruguay

A finales del año pasado, Uruguay emitió por primera vez un bono indexado a indicadores de cambio climático (BIIC), vinculando así la política de financiamiento soberana del país con sus objetivos ambientales. Emitió un total de 1.500 millones de dólares, con una demanda dos veces y media superior a la oferta.

Esta innovadora emisión permitió a Uruguay ampliar el grupo de inversores en títulos de deuda del país. Es importante destacar que, al emitir este instrumento, el país también se comprometió a alcanzar ambiciosos objetivos de reducción de emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero y a poner en marcha medidas para fomentar el secuestro de carbono en plantaciones forestales y bosques autóctonos. Estas son las bases de los KPI que forman parte del diseño del BIIC.
